As the 2026 season starts, the Varsity Baseball team is coming in with both an experienced coach and talented players. The team has worked day in and day out to compete at the elite level and create team chemistry.
This training is necessary for their tough schedule, playing multiple games against top-20 ranked teams like Harvard-Westlake, Chaminade, and Santa Margarita. Even with elite opponents, the team has had a strong start to the year, obtaining a record of 7-4-1. The Cubs are currently third in the Mission League standings.
While the players have driven the team’s success, the coaching staff has played an important and often overlooked role.
Head coach Keith Ramsey ’98 played at Loyola, then went on to play two years of college at Florida and competed at the professional level. At Loyola, he earned All-League and All-Conference honors and was named MVP of the SoCal Challenge his senior year.
He later pitched at the University of Florida, earning the team’s Best Pitcher Award before being selected in the MLB Draft and playing professionally. His past experience and passion for baseball have allowed him to push his players to be the best version of themselves.
He strives for the team to play with joy and have a genuine love for the game. He coaches in a way that promotes connection. This connection gives his players a sense of belonging and has a massive impact on the team as a whole. Even the players have noticed this impact throughout the season.
Caden Brackett ’28 said, “We started training in September and have also played every day since. These practices have made me feel prepared for the season when we face tough opponents.”
When asked about Coach, he said, “Coach Ramsey has helped increase our team morale to the point that I would argue we have the best team chemistry in the Mission League.”
With any sports season also comes predictions. Coach Ramsey said, “I think the team will do well. We will face tough opponents, but our team has amazing senior captains who are also leaders outside of practice.” He said no single player will get them there, but rather it will be a team effort.
As the team continues to build strong relationships on and off the field, and using Coach Ramsey’s knowledge of the game, the baseball team shows promising results and a hopeful playoff berth.
This emphasis on leadership, preparation, and team chemistry has become a defining trait of the group, giving them confidence as they take on some of the top competition in the state.
