A24 has slowly become one of the biggest power players in the film industry. Since its founding in 2012, the studio has released hit after hit and shows no signs of slowing down. With films such as X, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Midsommar, and Hereditary, A24 has dominated the box office while simultaneously building an intensely loyal fan base.
Now, A24 has another potential hit lined up for May: Backrooms, the highly anticipated film adaptation of the wildly popular analog horror series. The announcement has generated excitement among both hardcore horror fans and casual moviegoers alike.
Directed by Kane Parsons, the creator of the original series, Backrooms appears to be a faithful adaptation of the source material, something that especially excites longtime fans. Noah Holmes ‘28 shared, “I’m pretty excited to see the Backrooms movie since the original creator, Kane Parsons, is spearheading the project. I’ve been a fan of his work, so it’s cool to see it come to theaters.”
The success of A24 also reflects the recent surge in popularity surrounding independent film studios. Other companies, such as Neon, have experienced similar success in recent years. Independent studios often focus on complex character studies and more experimental storytelling that offer an alternative to the formulaic nature of many mainstream blockbusters. For many viewers, these films provide a refreshing break from the endless cycle of massive CGI-heavy franchise movies.
Axel Szlasa ‘28 commented on the growing appeal of indie films, saying, “I’m excited for the future of indie film because it offers more nuanced and realistic stories as opposed to CGI fantasies. Personally, I prefer movies that I can relate to in my own life, and I believe that with the rise of smaller studios, we will continue to see more accurate and fulfilling entertainment.”
Backrooms releases today, May 29, 2026, and audiences are eager to finally experience it on the big screen. Fans interested in seeing the film may want to buy tickets sooner rather than later.
Whether Backrooms will continue A24’s remarkable hot streak remains to be seen, but excitement surrounding the film suggests that the studio may have another success on its hands.
