Winter is coming, and our renowned basketball and soccer programs are gearing up for their regular season for the 2024-25 school year.
On the court, the basketball team finished last season with a commendable 16-14 record within the regular season, finishing sixth overall in the Mission League. The Mission League, one of the most prestigious basketball leagues in the country, is filled with steep competitors like Sierra Canyon and Notre Dame.
However, the Cubs have a promising team and schedule this year. With their upcoming exhibition at Intuit Dome as part of the Trinity/Mission League Showcase on Jan. 10, they will be the first Mission League team to ever participate in this event. The team captains, Merik Bernstein ‘25, Quincy Watson ‘26, and Kai Klein ‘25, will lead the charge when the Cubs travel to Santa Ana High School to face Upland on Nov. 19 for their first game of the season.
Watson said, “We are super excited to start the season. A lot of hard work has been put in during the fall. We’re ready to put it to the test.”
On Smith Field, the soccer team has also assembled a strong team this year. Last year, the Cubs had a 19-5-3 record during the regular season to finish second in the Mission League, compiling a 12-2 record during league play. Our roster this year is formidable, featuring forward Josh Gallagher ‘26, a top scorer last season and a contributor to much of Loyola’s success during the regular and CIF playoff seasons. In just a few weeks, the Cub footballers will face Warren High School on Dec. 4 to kick off their 2024-25 winter season.
When asked about the upcoming season, Varsity soccer player Declan McGough ’25 said, “I’m really optimistic about our team’s potential this year. With a strong group of seniors bringing leadership and experience, I think we have what it takes to win a league title and make a deep run in CIF.”
Make sure to come and support your winter sport athletes this year!
