Project Hail Mary is the most recent sci-fi film to come out of Hollywood, but it doesn’t really feel like most films released today. To fans, it’s a film that can resonate even after the credits roll, which isn’t something you can say about a lot of films anymore.
One of the most glaring aspects of the film is its visuals, which Project Hail Mary excels in. The film is immersive and ethereal—especially if watched in the intended viewing format—IMAX.
Francisco Tesen ‘26 said, “It was stunning to look at…it reminded me why I love movies.” Every shot was filled with vivid imagery, making the emptiness of space feel full. Most modern films can feel drained; however, this film feels like a painting, with every shot feeling intentional.
Another standout is the storytelling. Most films can be considered to be generic with recycled cliches that move their characters from point A to point B without providing anything deeper. Project Hail Mary goes beyond those cliches.
The small cast is each provided significance, with their relationships given meaning. Grace is relatable because he feels like a regular Joe put in an impossible situation. His relationship with Rocky is also a standout, mainly because viewers can relate to their own friendship.
Even with the novel existing for a while, most are going to the movie theater blind. Despite that, many felt like the movie was complete by itself. Tucker Rowland ‘28 stated, “I didn’t feel pressure to read it to know the story; if anything, it [Project Hail Mary] made me want to read the book.” While it is noted that the book focuses heavily on the science, the film is more character-oriented. Relationships and moments were altered for the big screen, and those who have read the book say that the changes actually serve the story better.
With all of the good reviews, it’s no surprise that Project Hail Mary is being considered as an Oscar contender. Some categories that it may win in are Cinematography, Adapted Screenplay and Directing. This movie does have its work cut out since 2026 is releasing some of the most anticipated films of the year, such as Dune: Part 3, The Odyssey and Digger.
Overall, Project Hail Mary can be considered an actual Hail Mary to the extent that it has reached and moved the hearts of many. Amaze amaze amaze.
