At the conclusion of his last season with Loyola’s soccer program, senior varsity team co- captain Elliot Smith-Hastie was named the 2016 CIF Southern Section Division I Boys Soccer Player of the Year and the Gatorade Boys Soccer Player of the Year, which, according to Gatorade.com, is “one of the most prestigious accolades in high school sports.”

Smith-Hastie is the first Loyola student to ever receive the Gatorade Player of the Year award, which was “established in 1985 to recognize and celebrate the nation’s most outstanding high school talents for their athletic achievement, academic excellence and exemplary character,” according to Gatorade.com

Scoring 22 goals and passing for 17 assists this season, Smith-Hastie helped lead the varsity soccer team to an undefeated 12-0 Mission League record and a 28-4 season record. He also had one goal and one assist in the Cubs’ Southern California Regional Final victory over Cathedral Catholic. At Loyola’s award assembly on Tuesday, May 24, the soccer program retired Smith-Hastie’s No. 10 jersey.
