In anticipation of the upcoming school year, Loyola has announced the new presidents of the Mothers’ Guild and Fathers’ Club: Mona Schlater-Hewlett and Lee Sailor, respectively.
Schlater-Hewlett, who has taught with the Los Angeles Unified School District for 25 years, currently has a son, Julian Hewlett ’19, who attends Loyola as well as a brother and nephews who previously attended.
She said, “I accepted the invitation from Fr. Goethals to become Mothers’ Guild President because I am passionate about helping all students to become the best version of themselves.”
Schlater-Hewlett has been committed to encouraging the mothers of Loyola students to volunteer so that their own sons, as well as many others, can become “men for and with others.” As president, Schlater-Hewlett is dedicated to maintaining and encouraging fellowship and fundraising, which are fundamental parts of the guild.
The Fathers’ Club was recently reinstated by Rev. Gregory Goethals, S.J. ’73 in 2008 after years of being inactive. Sailor was named president for this upcoming year and hopes to expand the active membership and support the greater Loyola community. Sailor has two sons; Ryan, who graduated in 2015, and Will, who is a current junior. After years of volunteering at his local parish and at Dolores-Mission, Sailor realized that becoming president of the Fathers’ Club was a natural extension for him to be of service to others.
He also said that he loves “being on campus and working with all of the spectacular people that have given their lives to making Loyola such a world-class institution.”
The Fathers’ Club provides Cubs and their dads an opportunity to work alongside each other in being “men for and with others,” such as hosting the annual Fathers’ Night Out poker fundraiser, the Father-Son Mass and BBQ, and the spring and fall Days of Service. In addition, the fathers often volunteer at the football games and at other events.
The new presidential appointments share in their vision to make the Loyola community close-knit and service-driven in the Ignatian mold. For upcoming Fathers’ Club and Mothers’ Guild events, check the calendar on the Loyola website.
