In a performance that will be remembered for years to come, senior Tucker Sweeney ‘25 etched his name into the record books on March 19 at Sterling Hills Golf Club, setting a new school record by shooting an astonishing eight-under-par through his round.
Sweeney’s round was nothing short of spectacular. The senior standout carded one eagle and seven birdies, showcasing both precision and poise under pressure on the challenging par-71 course. His remarkable feat surpassed the previous Loyola record and earned him widespread acclaim from teammates, coaches and competitors alike.
“Tucker was locked in all day,” said teammate Carter Gaede ‘26. “It felt like every time we looked over, he was sticking it close or rolling in another birdie.”
The highlight of Sweeney’s round came on hole 16, a par-five, where he reached the green in two and calmly drained a putt for an eagle. From there, he continued his birdie streak with laser-like approach shots and a red-hot putter that never wavered.
As the team eyes a deep run in the postseason, Sweeney’s leadership and consistency will be critical to their success. Loyola is currently ranked No. 1 in the CIF standings, a position they’ve held in large part to both strong team play and standout individual efforts.
“It feels incredible,” Sweeney said after the round. “I was just trying to stay in the moment, take it one shot at a time. I’m proud to represent Loyola and hopefully can lead us through the CIF playoffs.”
Sweeney’s journey on the course won’t end at Loyola. The senior has committed to continue his golf career at Santa Clara University next fall, where he’ll compete at the Division One level for the Broncos. His record-breaking performance at Sterling Hills is just the latest indication that his best golf may still be ahead of him.
Loyola’s golf program, already known for its strong tradition, now celebrates a new high-water mark. One defined by focus, talent, and the calm excellence of Tucker Sweeney on a record-breaking day at Sterling Hills—hoping to carry this momentum forward, looking to win a CIF championship with the help of captain Sweeney.
