Student council led this year’s annual Spirit Week from Monday, Nov. 2-6. The week included a Krispy Kreme donut sale every morning, a music concert from the Modern Poets and Composers club, and several activities such as the dunk tank and a student versus faculty dodgeball game.
Last Friday, which marked the beginning of Spirit Week, students and faculty Cubs members were encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes.
Jersey Day was on Monday, Nov. 2. On this day, members of the Loyola community could wear jerseys from any sports team. During lunch, student council hosted a match against the teachers in Leavey Gymnasium.
Sophomore Jack Arnerich said, “The game was a great way for both students and staff members to bond. It was also nice to see the fun and athletic sides of your favorite teachers.” Carl’s, Jr. also catered hamburgers from a food truck in the Hayden Circle.
On Tuesday students were allowed to wear a Hawaiian Shirt. During lunch, Kermit’s Ice Cream was available for sale and AMP Radio provided music at the loading dock. Staff members also entered the dunk tank.
Freshman Cole Carrigan, after dunking freshman football coach Mr. Levi Line, said “It felt great to be able to dunk my coach. Now I can remind him of it during practice.”
Wednesday was USA Day, where students and faculty members could show their patriotic spirit by wearing the nation’sl colors. Zilicious sold tacos and barbequed beef and chicken at their station.
First year retreat groups also competed against each other in ultimate frisbee and other assorted games.
Freshman Eddson Barriga remarked, “Being able to play frisbee and compete with my first year group was a great way to complete our freshman retreat experience because it allowed us to interact and bond with our group members.”
A mass was held Thursday honoring the Jesuit saints.
Senior Brady Hassenberg said, “The mass was a great way to help conclude spirit week. After a fun week of activities and free dress, students appreciated the chance to remember and respect the Jesuit saints and the virtues that make Loyola unique.”
Following the liturgy in Xavier Center, students had the opportunity to battle each other in a inflatable arena.
Sophomore Fintan Hiney said, “It was a lot of fun to joust with my friends in front of the student body and teachers. I think everyone enjoyed watching the competitions, and it gave everyone something to laugh and brag about.”
In summary of this week’s events, Sophomore Kai Deguzman said, “This week and its various activities has allowed the Loyola community as a whole to grow together. Whether it was wearing your favorite jersey to class and showing off your team spirit or dunking the Dean in the dunk tank, everyone had a memorable week.”
