Junior Joseph Myers places in top five percent of AMC
Joseph Myers, a junior, took the American Math Competitions (AMC) 12 Exam on Feb. 17. This 25-question exam was administered to juniors and seniors across the nation, and Myers placed within the top five percent.
Myers took the The American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) on March 16. This test is 15 questions long designed for a three-hour examination period.
Myers said, “The test was three hours long for 15 questions, and I needed all that time to answer eight questions.”
If he places in the top range again, he will be invited to the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad.
“I felt good that I did well on the AMC. My goal is to reach the next competition of this competition.”
A total of 56 students from the Junior Classical League (JCL) travelled to the 61st annual California JCL (CAJCL) Convention 2016 at Woodbridge High School on March 18–19.
Loyola’s JCL sent a Latin II and Latin III team that both had qualified at Carcer, a regional qualifying tournament held in February. The Latin II team won second place at the convention, and the Latin III team made it to the semi-final round.
Students also placed first in individual competitions such as Ancient Geography II, Mythology II, Grammar II, the Catapult and the 4×4 relay. Loyola’s JCL students swept the Intermediate Open Certamen competition. Senior Christopher Warren won 1st place in the student talent show.
Junior David Mendieta was elected CAJCL Parliamentarian for the next academic year.
JCL moderator Teresa Kawamata said, “They displayed great school spirit as a school, and we all had a great time. Everyone supported each other in the contests.”
Sean Plumb ’10 was one of five singers to be named a winner of the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions, the most prestigious national vocal competition held annually at the Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts to showcase the rising opera stars around the world.
After advancing through the Auditions’ district and regional levels, Plumb, along with eight other finalists, performed an evening concert at the Metropolitan Opera House and was eventually selected as a Grand Finals winner.
As winner of this year’s competition, Plumb will receive a $15,000 cash prize.
