The Facilities Management department carried out multiple campus improvements over the summer, including renovations in Leavy Gym and Pinney Hall.
All the spaces in Leavey Gymnasium––except for the arena–– were also fitted with air conditioning this summer. The locker room, trainers’ and coaches’ offices and all second-floor rooms are now equipped with air conditioning. The arena currently has ventilation, but no type of air conditioning. According to Senior Director of Facilities Management Michael McDermott, the installment of air conditioning in the arena of Leavey Gymnasium will begin in the near future.
Otis Elevator remodeled the faculty elevator in Pinney Hall. They replaced the old electrical equipment, including pistons, pumps and motors.. The elevator’s interior cab, however, is still being remodeled, and the elevator will remain out of service until the cab is completed and ready for inspection in about six weeks.
Smith Field is the main focus of improvement for this year. Currently, Loyola rents out temporary lighting and generators for home football games. McDermott said that Loyola is looking into installing permanent stadium lighting for Smith Field.
Additionally, the track around Smith Field will be replaced after this year’s track season in mid-2017.
The permanent lighting and the new track on Smith Field is a joint project. “These projects go hand-in-hand because when we tear up the old track, we can run the new wiring and conduit for the stadium lights and then install the new track over it,” McDermott said. Once the new track is laid, the poles for the lights will be installed. Most likely, this project will start in early June, depending on the graduation schedule.
