Coach Keith Ramsey ’98 and the varsity Cubs knew this season had potential to be something special from the moment practices began in August. After a disappointing finish last year that saw them miss out on the playoffs, Ramsey knew something had to change. Fortunately, he entered this year with a determined and talented group of guys in front of him ready to rise to the occasion.
The driver has been a simple motto: MLC 25 – Mission League Champs 2025. It’s an ambitious goal, but not out of reach for a gritty, hard-working team.
The Cubs came out hot going 5-1 to start the season, their best opening since 2018. League games have been no different as the team is 10-4, sitting in third place in the Mission League. With plenty of baseball still ahead, the Cubs have their sights set on climbing higher.
RHP Luke Connon ’26, commented on the matter, “Teamwork makes the dream work. I know that might sound cliche but this team has so much talent and chemistry top to bottom. All 35 players know their role and do what needs to be done. Selfless, gritty, fun baseball. Other teams get ‘tired of the fight,’ and we just play our games and execute. Some might say the Cubs are hot, but we’ve got a long way to go to where we want to be.”
Rivalry week went well as Loyola swept St. Francis in two shutout performances that showed off the team’s grit and composure. When the bats go quiet, the Cubs aren’t afraid to play small ball, laying down bunts and staying disciplined. It’s a team that does the little things right.
Coming back from spring break, it will be a true test. Loyola takes on Notre Dame for a three-game series, followed by a high-stakes two-game series against second-place Harvard Westlake. With a few games to go, Loyola controls their own destiny and is in a great position to go on and make a run.
The mission continues, and the Cubs are certainly hot.
