“Captain America: Brave New World” is Marvel Studios’ newest project, starring Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Danny Ramirez (Falcon), and Harrison Ford (President Ross/Red Hulk). The movie performed relatively well at the Box Office, making 360 million dollars as of this article being written, and garnering a 78% in Rotten Tomatoes.
That being said, many people were disappointed by the fact that this movie advertised the Red Hulk only to be on-screen for around five minutes. Omar Ismail ‘28 said, “I think the movie was good, but it needed a longer fight scene with Red Hulk.” Luke Lao ‘28 added, “I thought that the movie was dull. I expected action out of a Marvel movie, but it was much more story-focused than expected. Promoting the Red Hulk only for him to last one scene was extremely disappointing.”
Many people also criticized the new-ish character played by Tim Blake Nelson, Samuel Sterns (AKA Mr. Blue in The Incredible Hulk 2008). In the comics, Samuel Sterns becomes a villain called The Leader. In this movie, they introduce him as the one behind all the chaos, but when he appears, he has pale-ish green skin and a lumpy deformed head. Many were upset since Marvel initially planned to make a comic-accurate Leader, but decided against it.
Even though many didn’t enjoy this movie, droves of viewers still watched, and it brought Marvel commercial success. It is evident that “Captain America: Brave New World” went through multiple rewrites and reshoots to make the film look and sound better. At the end of the day, viewers received an “okay” Marvel film that is intended to set the stage for the next two blockbuster Avengers films: “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. However, given the title of the film and its weight as a successful part of the Marvel franchise, this film was a disappointment for fans everywhere.
