With the second semester well underway, the Loyalist feels it is imperative to recognize and celebrate the hard-working faculty and staff who work tirelessly to make Loyola great. This month’s highlight is Eli Hernandez.
Hernandez, who everyone knows as Eli, has been working at Loyola for more than 11 years as a security guard, keeping the campus safe. More than just a presence on campus, Hernandez values the relationships he builds with students, ensuring they feel both safe and welcome.
His dedication to his job extends beyond just his work hours. He is often one of the first people whom students, staff, and visitors encounter when they walk onto campus, and he takes pride in being a friendly face that people can trust. His approachable demeanor and calming presence are vital in creating an environment where everyone feels secure and supported. His role as a security guard might not always be in the spotlight, but his impact on the Loyola community is undeniable.
When asked what his favorite part of his job is, Eli responded, “I love being able to meet so many students every day. Sometimes, after graduation, I see them in public, and they always say hello like we’re old friends.”
Outside of school, Eli is a true Angeleno at heart. An avid Dodgers, Lakers, and LAFC fan, Eli bleeds blue, gold, purple, and black, never missing a game—especially now that the Lakers traded for Luka.
When asked what he wanted all students to know about him, Eli commented, “I’m really nice and welcoming, so never be afraid to come say ‘hi’ and get a fist bump.”
Whether he’s cheering on his favorite teams or offering a warm greeting on campus, Eli’s positivity is infectious, making Loyola a brighter, more welcoming place for everyone.
