In a game filled with intensity, 7th ranked Loyola squared off against 2nd ranked Mater Dei in a physical showdown. From the opening whistle, both teams played their hearts out, trying to secure a win for their school. In the 5th minute, fans saw some impressive dribbling from senior Will Hoshek ’25, as he was able to dribble away from Mater Dei’s goalie and score the opening goal. Three minutes later, Mater Dei was awarded a penalty kick as the ball skipped off the wet grass and hit the hand of Jack Nixon ’26 in the box.
After the 8th minute, both teams put on a masterclass defensive performance, only allowing minimal chances on goal and ending in a 1-1 draw.
Jack Horan ’26, who was in attendance, had this to say about the game and how his fellow Cubs played: “I was very happy with how we played, showing great heart and enthusiasm. I would have loved to see a more evenly called match along with a Loyola win, but I am confident in our team’s ability to stun Mater Dei on Saturday.”
Nixon had this reflection after the game: “Mater Dei is a great team. They are very skilled on all sides of the ball. We have some things to clean up, but I am very proud with how we handled ourselves.”
With Mater Dei and Loyola tied, Saturday’s match at Mater Dei will be the decisive game to determine who advances to the next round. This has been a historic season for these Cubs, and they have shown incredible determination.
