October is Cancer Awareness Month, and during the week of Oct. 14, Loyola shows their support for the fight against cancer. From sporting pink shirts and wristbands to attending mass at Clougherty Chapel, Cancer Awareness Week has positively impacted Loyola in a significant way. This was all made possible thanks to the Cubs Against Cancer Club.
Club leader Declan O’Lionan ‘25 demonstrates his leadership in the club and what being a man for and with others means to him. O’Lionan explained his hopes for the club, “We can build a community of Cubs that contribute toward research for and awareness of cancer.”
He added, “This parallels our school’s ideology of being a man for and with others. We hope we can support those affected by cancer on our campus and worldwide.”
John Ahearn ‘07, the Cubs Against Cancer moderator, hopes this club will make an impression on Cubs and motivate them to recognize each others’ challenges. Ahearn, who had his own experience with cancer, feels that his encounter has led him to become more involved with raising awareness. To truly have an impact on spreading awareness, he wants people to ask themselves, “What can we do to help people who struggle against cancer?” and “How can we help people who suffer, personally since it can affect anybody from any age and background?”
If there is anything that Loyola could take away from this week, on a broader scale than cancer awareness, our wonderful Loyola community is and should be there for anybody at any time. The support that we show reflects our core values of being Men For and With Others, which could help us find ways to help one another.
