Welcome, Cubs! We are thrilled to be serving as Editors-in-Chief for the 100th volume of The Loyalist, and we cannot wait to bring you the best stories by Cubs, for Cubs and about Cubs.
The Loyalist has now been the official student-run news source of Loyola High School for nearly a century. While we won’t be running headlines like “Dating Younger Women” (June 1982) or “Kazoo Lover Defends Rights” (September 1974) in paying tribute to our past, we will be working our hardest to keep you informed of all the lates happenings at 1901 Venice and beyond. From a profile of our newest football transfers to heated debates over our new bell schedule, you will not want to miss this year’s Loyalist!
Our 100th volume comes at a crucial time in both Loyola and throughout the wider world. As Fr. Gregory M. Goethals, SJ ‘73, President of Loyola High School, prepares to leave his role after nearly 20 years at Loyola’s helm, a contentious and polarizing election cycle dominates the country’s headlines. In these tumultuous times, having a trusted source of information is now more important than ever.
In a time of such immense change, The Loyalist must adapt and become more relevant than before. That’s why we have overhauled our publication since the last issue in
May. From creating a new section of the paper (Lifestyle), to reviving and populating our website (theloyalist.org) to maintaining a social media presence worthy of our digital age, The Loyalist is evolving for the modern-era while staying true to its century-long tradition of being. We will bring you, as Fr. Goethals says, the “best damn high school” newspaper in Southern California.
