The freshman soccer team has a 7-2-1 record after finishing their first two tournaments. Led by head coach Jorge Torres, the team placed fourth in the West Torrance Tournament and finished the Westside Tournament with four wins and one loss on Thursday, Dec. 15.
The Cubs started the Westside Tournament with a 7-0 win against Artesia on Nov. 29, followed by a 1-0 non-tournament victory against St. John Bosco on Dec. 1.
The team took a break from the Westside Tournament to compete in the West Torrance Tournament on Dec. 3. The Cubs started with a 4-0 win against Redondo and a 5-1 win against Bishop Montgomery. Both games were held on the same day at West Torrance High School.
The team continued play in the Westside Tournament on Dec. 6 with a 1-2 loss to Jordan, breaking a four-game win streak.
On Dec. 8, the Cubs beat Crescenta Valley by a score of 4-0, marking their fourth shutout win of the season.
The Cubs’ concluded the West Torrance Tournament on Dec. 10 with a 0-0 tie to Mira Costa and a 1-3 loss to Palos Verdes.
On Dec. 13, the team resumed play in the Westside Tournament with a 6-0 win against South Torrance. This six point margin of victory marks the largest for the team this season. On Thursday, Dec. 15, the team concluded play in the tournament with a 4-1 win against Peninsula.
With two tournaments in the record book, freshman forward George Grey believes the team’s chemistry has improved since the start of the season. “The team chemistry is surprisingly good, especially for a new team,” Grey said.
Many freshman, like Grey, they have aspirations to play on varsity and JV teams in the future.
“The main goal of the team moving forward is basically developing players for varsity and JV and learning about the style of play Loyola has,” Grey said.
The team’s next game will be against Cathedral High School on Dec. 19, followed by an away game against Crescenta Valley on Dec. 20.
