After defeating Cathedral Catholic high school 2-0 in the CIF Southern Division I Southern California Regional Final on Saturday, March 12, the varsity soccer team brought home its second CIF Title in three years. Senior captain Elliot Smith-Hastie and senior Jack Newman both scored in the Cubs’ victory over the Cathedral Catholic Dons.
Under the leadership of head coach Chris Walter ’93, the Cubs completed their season with an undefeated 12-0 Mission League record and a 28-4 overall record, which includes a 21 game winning streak that culminated in the CIF Championship victory on March 12.
On Thursday, April 28, the varsity soccer team was named to the 11th annual Maxpreps Tour of Champions, which honored the Cubs’ success this season, marking the first time Loyola’s soccer program has ever received the recognition. Only 20 teams out of 34,000 qualifying teams received this recognition. Maxpreps also ranked Loyola fifth in the nation and first in both California and the Southern Section.
