Loyola students, parents, friends and alumni are invited to participate in the third Annual Day of Service on Saturday, April 8. The event started in 2015 when Loyola celebrated its 150th anniversary.
Students and other interested participants can register for the event on the Loyola website.
This year, Cubs will serve at 10 sites across Los Angeles including Habitat for Humanity in Pasadena, where participants will construct homes for veterans; Los Angeles Regional Food Bank in Vernon, where students will sort and pack food for the hungry; and the St. Francis Center in Downtown Los Angeles, where students will prepare and serve food to the homeless.
Other sites include the Good Shepherd Shelter located near Loyola, where all participants will work on landscaping in order to make the appearance of the shelter more appealing; the Meet Each Need with Dignity program in Pacoima, where participants will sort and distribute food items; the Blessed Sacrament School and Homeless Shelter in Hollywood, where participants will paint and work on general repair of the buildings.
Cubs will also volunteer at the Activity and Recreation Center in North Hollywood, where students will be landscaping and repairing facilities; Centro de Niños in Downtown LA, where all participants will paint and repair; and the Avila Gardens assisted living center, where students will help the elderly.
According to Community Service Director Tom Zeko, the event has placed approximately 300 volunteers among 10 to 12 service sites. There is still availability for the event, and participants should register online to choose their service site.
Junior Justin Villiados said, “The Day of Service is unique. You don’t usually get such a clear opportunity to help the community with a choice of service site and friends.”
Zeko said, “Students have fun participating in the event. It’s good work with good people. Families like it because they get to do community service with their sons, and students enjoy being able to participate in an event alongside their buddies.”
Freshman Matthew Garvey said, “I am excited about the Day of Service. As a freshman, I don’t really know what to expect, but from what I’ve seen and heard so far, I feel like I’ll truly enjoy giving back to the community and learn what community service means and what it’s like as a Cub.”
Sophomore Liam Mudd said, “I participated in the event last year, and I plan to [participate]this year as well. I loved the experience, and I do believe we succeeded in giving back to the community for all it has done for us. All students should take advantage of this opportunity, it is one you will remember.”
