Sean O’Malley ’17 Starts in First Game for Lafayette College

Loyola football alum Sean O’Malley ’17 is currently a freshman at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania.  The Lafayette Leopards are a Division I FCS college football program that plays in the Patriot League.

O’Malley is the all-time leader in passing for Loyola, with 4,199 yards as a three-year starter for the Varsity Football Team.

In his senior season at Loyola, O’Malley was voted a team captain by his fellow teammates.

Offensive Coordinator Casey Quedenfeld said, “[Sean was a] natural born leader.  He was a hard worker who always wanted to be the best quarterback possible.”

“[Sean] hasn’t skipped a beat,” Quedenfeld said as he pointed out how Loyola has helped Sean reach this point in his career.  “Being a three year starter in a highly competitive Southern California league has definitely given him playing experience that has helped him at the the next level.”

On Sept. 2, O’Malley was the first freshman quarterback in 31 years to start at the position for the season opener for the Lafayette Leopards, one of the oldest college football programs in the country.

Reflecting on his first game as a collegiate athlete, O’Malley said, “Starting my first game was an amazing experience. Loyola football really taught me how to establish myself as a leader.”

In his first three games this season, Sean has thrown for four touchdowns for the Leopards.  Sean said, “I am  thankful to have been given the opportunity.  It felt great to finally reach that milestone [of starting], but that was just the beginning.”
