New Art Club fosters creativity

The newly formed Art Club allows students to explore their various artistic abilities through collaborations with fellow Loyola students in different forms, such as painting, photography, and sculpting.

Desiring more options to satisfy his need for art and his yearning to improve as an artist, Junior John Schlaerth developed the Art Club and sought out art teacher Patricia Meyers to be the moderator.

“I started the Art Club in order to allow students the chance to express themselves in an artistic environment through multiple mediums, not being hindered by the specificity of a certain class,” Schlaerth said.

In the Art Club, students can create their own art in various forms such as painting, drawing and ceramics, while having the chance to show their work to others and get peer feedback. On a typical day in the club, students work on their respective artwork.

“The Art Club gives students something to do at lunch time,” said Meyers.

The Art Club serves as a workshop as well as a learning experience. In the club Schlaerth said that he plans on holding miniature exhibits, where student and faculty artists show off their work and explain how they created them, so students can learn from one another.

“The freedom offered by a non-rigorous art environment will fully allow the artistic potential of individuals to be shown,” Schlaerth said.

As to expanding the club, plans are already taking shape to expand the club “through an increase in memberships and through explorations in how to approach new art mediums such as ceramics and drawing,” Schlaerth said. He plans to spread the word on his new club to enable students to show their creativity and talent.

Club meetings for Art Club are held in Burr 002 during lunch on Mondays.
